The question above is one that I have to help folks answer with every fitting. What style and type of hearing aid is best for them? It’s not an easy question and answering it really does take a little skill, and some probing questions.
Yet, with most patient’s needs today, I most often turn to the new receiver in the canal, (RIC) modular systems, over custom made instruments. The reasons start with their incredible versatility, and very fact that I can demonstrate the benefits of better hearing immediately, to most patients who walk in my door. This versus, just talking about the benefits, while I take a set of impressions, and then wait days, or weeks for that custom set to be delivered.
Having instruments on hand to actually demonstrate better hearing, rather than just talking, and speculating over how much improvement might be achieved, when ordering any custom instruments, is just the beginning.
Being hard of hearing myself, and having worn almost every type, and style of instrument, since originally being fit in 1994, I can tell you honestly, that the new, tiny RICs are the most comfortable, and offer the most natural sounds available in our industry today.
As to lasting value, well once any custom instrument is made for a patient, save the salvage, it has value only to the person it has been made for. Should it need service, most repairs, require the instruments be returned to the lab. This leaves its’ user without for from a week to ten days, or more, any time this happens.
Contrast this, with the fact that most service, and repairs of today’s RICs, take place within minutes, right in our office. And, if well cared for, can be reprogrammed repeatedly, or even fit to another patient, with very little modification, and you can begin to see how modularization trumps customization, for service, and lasting value.
If, you or a loved one is considering getting hearing help, you really do owe it to yourself to try some of the new modular, RIC gear, before you order, and wait for any custom instruments. They take just minutes to fit, and can make a huge difference in the lives of those who wear them. I know, as I wear a pair that I’ve come to rely on.
