We seem to collectively be an industry in what, author, anthropologist and futurist, Alvin Toffler described in his work by the same name, as a state of “Future Shock”.
When traveling recently to a major manufacturer’s home office I had time to mingle, listen, and share a bit about practice styles, different marketing approaches, with everyone from folks with multiple offices, to folks, like me who focus on one location.
Wherever I stopped to listen, the underlying buzz was one of being disoriented, and uncertain in the face of the ever accelerating changes being faced in every aspect of their practices; from the expectations, abilities, and lifestyle of the folks we serve, to that relentless march of Moore’s law, and it’s effects upon the gear we use daily.
Now, if you know me at all, I have a good time just about wherever I am. If, you come in, and don’t get greeted with a smile, you are probably, in the wrong place. This, because, we have fun doing what we do. Just ask any of our patients.
So, with my ‘on a mission’ Fedora, this mustache, and the big grin I wear most of the time, I kind of stood out a bit.
My mood attracted more than a few looks from those not having such a good time. It resulted in more than one query, from some extremely well credentialed, but seriously concerned colleagues, who wanted to know just what I was so happy about, when there was so much challenging change, and woe in our marketplace?
Well, the short answer for that is; that my smile, and attitude are often the only things that I can control in the face of the incredible number of externalities that life throws at each of us, each day.
The attitude comes, because we practice from first principle, as explained brilliantly by Neale Donald Walsh in his “Conversations with God” series.
Because of this understanding, I’ve come to see things from a different perspective.
Distilled, it comes down to what you are choosing to BE, right here, and now, regardless of what life presents.
It then grows to a recognition that everything you need, really is right in front of you already, everyday.
As you grow in this wider perspective, you come to understand that what you are experiencing, is exactly what you’ve been expecting, and you begin to realize that you are co-creating your own life’s experiences.
You begin to understand that how you choose see any experience in life, will have everything to do with the quality of the experience, for everyone involved.
As your understanding grows with application of this first principle of Deity, you understand that when we give of ourselves, in attitude, time, money, resources, skills, experience, and, love, that we are ultimately, and honestly, are giving to ourselves, in a different form, and the laws, and general rules of Karma, and sowing apply.
Just like the scriptures indicates, not all of these seeds of service, cash, love, or skills will bear fruit. But, just like any seed, when it does, it bears far beyond what was sown originally.
Be Blessed. It is a simple choice, like all states of being. Claim it, live it with a big smile, and begin to enjoy the changes in your life’s experiences.
But, be ye therefore not deceived, for as a man soweth, so shall he reap.
So, sow with love, abundantly, and continuously, with a full understanding that the universe cannot help, but respond in kind.
For an excellent, incredibly well researched book on why Giving works, and how to avoid being taken by the takers of this world, while not becoming cynical, I would highly recommend; Doctor Adam Grant, professor at the Wharton University’s School of Business’s “Give and Take, a Revolutionary Approach to success.”
Oh, and, “Don’t Worry. Be Happy”.
