After Years of hearing on one side, hearing the world in stereo once again took some getting used to for Tatiana. But, well worth the investment and effort.
Tatiana Bordain’s hearing loss began after a series of chronic ear infections that lead ultimately to reconstructive surgery, while still a small child in her native Russia. Moving with her parents to this country as a child, she grew up here, and now lives with her fiance, Drew in Melbourne.
Having developed a hearing loss at a young age, Tatiana began wearing a hearing aid in her right ear about nine years ago. Though her loss was bilateral, with her hearing thresholds fairly even between her ears, money was tight, and she’d been getting by for over nine years, by using a hearing aid in only one ear.
Though this one ear strategy was certainly better than nothing, it was clearly not optimal.
Tatiana was noticing increasing difficulty hearing Drew, and the customers, and colleagues at the bank where she worked. She knew she needed help, and like so many consumers today Tatiana, and Drew set about to do their research on the internet, and Googled hearing aids.
That’s how they found us.
When I met Tatiana and Drew, it didn’t take long to figure out why she was having problems.
Not only was she only wearing a hearing aid in her right ear, the CIC Tatiana was wearing, was over six years old. This put it well past it’s prime, and even after a thorough cleaning, and a few trips around our Spin Doctor, though working, the sound it was producing was really quite distorted. It was no wonder she was having trouble.
After listening carefully to Tatiana’s situation, lifestyle, budget, and hearing goals I recommended she try a new set of RICs from Rexton.
Their on board In Situ audiometry allowed us to quickly, and accurately check Tatiana’s thresholds. Their wide range of receiver options, sizes, and tips meant that we were able to demonstrate the benefits of better hearing in just a few minutes.
As Tatiana is an active cell phone user who also loves music, we set up a Mini Blu RCU with her Strata 2cs. Rexton’s entire Strata line comes pre-equipped to take advantage of the far field communications potential opened up through the Bluetooth MiniBlu accessory. Using this accessory, Tatiana is able to enjoy not only handsfree, stereo streaming of her cell phone calls, but also, stereo streaming of the music she loves.
As soon as we programmed her new aids the difference in Tatiana’s ability to hear changed remarkably, and instantly. She was hearing like she hadn’t in years.
What most folks don’t realize is that changing someone’s hearing significantly takes some getting used to. Having not worn a hearing aid in her left ear before, though she was experiencing better hearing than she had in years, Tatiana was also experiencing very changed world sound environment.
For Tatiana, using both ears the way they were designed, after having only amplified sounds in the one for so many years, was going to take a little getting used to.
At first sounds seemed to come from everywhere. After a week Tatiana wasn’t really convinced of the value of using both ears, and admitted to having only worn the one during most of her trial week.
Knowing how important maintaining stimulation to both sides of the central auditory cortex is to Tatiana’s long term well being, I stressed the importance to her of giving her nervous system a chance to adapt to a corrected signal from both ears.
I knew, as young, and generally healthy as Tatiana is, that given just a short period of time, the side she’d neglected would respond to the new signals. Soon she’d be able to integrate the sounds from both sides, and the anxiety brought on by the changes, would be replaced with the substantially increased benefits being provided.
I explained how our brains rely on the difference in the signals received between our ears in order to tell the direction a sound is coming from. This ability to locate sounds directionally is one of the most important in our ability to understand in those more complex sound environments, where we must deal with multiple sound sources at once.
Processing all of the sounds through one ear, as Tatiana had been doing, allows significant improvement in quiet environments. However, that quickly deteriorates, as the number of sounds in the environment increases. We simply cannot tell where a sound is coming from using only the signal received from one ear, and we are deprived of all of the richness of a life in stereo.
After listening to Tatiana’s first weeks experience, it was clear that if she was going to enjoy the benefits I knew were available to her through this system, we were going to have to be both flexible, and accommodating.
Listening more closely, it became clear that finances were a major issue. Though both Tatiana and Drew have good jobs, they are planning a wedding, and so budgets are tight. Soon I came to understood that the real issue Tatiana was having with fitting her left ear was the budget. While she knew she needed to hear better, the pressures of planning a wedding were clearly weighing on her decision.
I offered to revisit the offer we’d made, and see if we couldn’t find a way to make her investment fit better within her budget, if she would agree to two things as follows:
First, that we extend her trial by at least another week, with her agreement to wear both aids during that time, and second, that if I was able to find the additional discount that would make the fitting work for her, that she agree to let us tell about her experiences with us, on this site, and be featured as one of our featured patients in the “Senior Scene” and “Spotlight on Brevard” monthly magazines.
As your are reading about Tatiana’s experiences here, obviously, things are working out for the better with her hearing. She’s quickly learning to use both ears, and within a week she’d become convinced that there was real benefit.
We were able to sharpen our pencils enough to discount her investment in really great gear down to a manageable monthly payment, that we’ve spread out for her using CareCredit.
When I asked Tatiana what she liked most about her new fitting, she advised that aside from hearing Drew much better, and not having to ask customers to repeat as much at work, also she really loved the ability to stream music directly into her ears for her own private concerts.
She explained that while she really enjoyed hanging with Drew, and his friends, that there were times, particularly at the sporting events where she really enjoyed the relief afforded by that private stereo concert.
Not only was she enjoying music like she hadn’t in years, her own personal concert stream saved her from having to listen and participate in the associated boy talk she found tiring.
Finding that extra discount, extending her trial, explaining why two ears are better, and helping Tatiana find a way to enjoy the benefits available using today’s gear, is just another part of being Patient Centered & Results Oriented here at A Advanced Hearing Care. As I explained to Tatiana, it’s just how we roll, who we are, everyday.
We are grateful, and glad that for Tatiana we were able to demonstrate what that means.
We would love to do the same for you, or a loved one. If, you, or someone you love has trouble hearing, or understanding, we’d be happy to help.
We offer no obligation trial demonstrations of the some of the most advanced hearing instruments available. We’ve got a variety of financing options, and even offer a variety of quality used, and reconditioned instruments to accommodate even the tightest of budgets.
